Backup power supplies for circulation pumps are an important accessory for "backing up" boilers, fireplaces, and other heating devices. They serve to ensure the operation of the pump during both short-term and long-term power outages. Backup power supplies thus protect the boiler from overheating and subsequent material damage. They also ensure your safety!
For longer outages, which last several hours, it is necessary to ensure the removal of hot water from the boiler – especially for solid fuel boilers. In such cases, solid fuel (coal, wood) burns inside the boiler, and it is necessary to remove hot water for several hours to prevent the boiler from overheating. Among the effective features of backup power supplies for circulation pumps is also compensation for voltage fluctuations in the network.
Backup power supplies for pumps are also useful when the electrical network is turned off for an extended period, but you need to prepare domestic hot water (DHW) connected to solar heating. Backup power supplies can keep appliances running.
There are two types of backup power supplies (according to connection) – sine wave, which are generally of higher quality and more efficient, and you can connect any device to them, which you then plug into a standard socket. Trapezoidal backup power supplies are a cheaper option and have limited usage possibilities. These sources try to mimic the sine wave of alternating current. Such a waveform may resemble a bar graph more than a sine wave curve. Some appliances may have trouble operating with a too "rough" waveform. Waveforms and characteristics of power supplies are a broad topic in the field of electrical engineering.
A backup power supply should be selected based on the required backup duration and the appliance being backed up. They differ in battery capacity, which is essentially the time they allow the pump to operate. It is given in ampere-hours (Ah). When selecting, it is important to know the power consumption of the circulation pumps. Knowing the battery capacity (Ah) and the power consumption of the pump in kilowatt-hours (kW), it is easy to calculate how long the device will operate on the backup power supply's battery.
Backup duration is, for example, about an hour at a consumption of 120 W. Manufacturers usually provide this value for normal operation, so the actual figure may vary. If interested in a specific product, it is also necessary to focus on the lifetime of the batteries. Over time, the batteries – depending on the use of the backup power supply – need to be replaced. It is worth noting here that even without use, the battery wears out and its lifespan decreases.
Bola.cz offers the backup power supply Integra Tech Heat Master F200, which has fully automatic operation. It is suitable for circulation pumps and boilers regardless of type or manufacturer. The backup power supply PG 500 Compact from the renowned company Wilo has two built-in maintenance-free batteries of 12V 9Ah. The battery lifespan is approximately 5 years.
