Following the success of the Danfoss Icon room thermostat for underfloor heating, the second generation, Danfoss Icon2, is now available on the market. Its acquisition will save you costs on gas or electricity (depending on your heat source), while providing higher performance and saving time on installation, which takes an installer an average of just 9 minutes. Smart underfloor heating Danfoss Icon2 also allows integration into a smart home. Would you like, for example, integration with Somfy TaHoma Switch and integration into the TaHoma system? No problem. What other innovations, options, and benefits does Icon2 bring, and how does it specifically differ from its predecessor? You will find all this and more in our article.
Danfoss Icon2 provides precise and efficient control of underfloor heating, promising maximum compatibility with smart homes and flexibility to suit all types of houses. Like the original solution, the new model is available for four thermostat installation variants, namely for installation of thermostats in a flush-mounted box, on the wall, wireless, and wireless with infrared sensor. Besides thermostats, Danfoss Icon2 alternatively offers the option to connect room sensors, which differ from thermostats in that they do not have a display and cannot connect to a floor sensor for measuring floor temperature.
Homeowners who want a well-designed underfloor heating system with slim thermostats offering higher performance with lower energy consumption (up to 30% less than the previous generation) will certainly not go wrong with Danfoss Icon2. Temperature regulation in the home is thus faster and more economical. In the thermostat variant with an infrared sensor, the infrared beam measures the floor temperature, allowing for very fine regulation.
Automatic balancing by the Danfoss Icon2 system reduces the flow of shorter circuits in small rooms and prioritises longer circuits in large rooms when there is a greater demand for heating. This ensures that the available amount of heat is distributed to all rooms to provide users with maximum comfort and efficiency. A regulated system can operate with a lower supply temperature, leading to significant energy savings.
Danfoss Icon2 seamlessly integrates with the Danfoss Ally mobile user app, which allows convenient remote control of all Danfoss smart features, including heating regulation. The app control option is enabled by adding the Danfoss Ally Gateway to the home router. Like Danfoss Ally, Danfoss Icon2 can easily connect to smart assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Home (from Q3/2023), allowing for voice control. When it's time for a holiday, the Danfoss Ally app makes it easy to set the heat before departure – or even during your travels. You can plan for maximum comfort with lower energy consumption.
The Danfoss Ally Gateway is the only additional device you need to connect to the cloud, and you also gain all the smart heating features. It is based on the Zigbee 3.0 protocol, which allows smart homes to become even smarter. It enables easy integration of Icon2 into other smart home solutions based on the Zigbee protocol. Most users prefer a single app to control their smart home. Therefore, the Danfoss Icon2 system can also be controlled by the user through the same app used to control the rest of the house.
Danfoss Icon2 connects to Zigbee-based smart home solutions by opening the respective app and adding Icon2 as a new device. Depending on the smart home solution, this can be done either by simply pressing the OK button or, in the case of Zigbee 3.0 solutions, by first scanning the QR code in the lower left corner on the front of the device and then clicking the OK button to complete the integration process.
Through the same protocol, you can also connect Danfoss Icon2 with the popular Somfy TaHoma Switch, an intelligent control element with two individually adjustable buttons for launching scenarios, allowing you to control all devices in the home. Somfy TaHoma Switch can control up to 200 io-homecontrol and 50 Zigbee products simultaneously.
Danfoss Icon2 thermostats use Powerline communication, which greatly simplifies installation. Connection and commissioning are easier and faster because these activities are carried out digitally. Simply use the appropriate mobile user app, which guides you step by step and contains everything you need to know to get the job done. Installation is so simple and quick that, with the correct procedure, it takes no more than 9 minutes.
The new Danfoss Icon2 / 24V RT room thermostats are designed to look like ordinary light switches. The elegant yet compact design of the thermostats is combined with a very user-friendly and intuitive system with a touch display for quick overview. Small, slim room thermostats have a depth of just 16 mm, making them suitable for any room. The fade away function along with the minimalist design gives them elegance and allows them to blend in with the surroundings. The touch display of the thermostats automatically turns off, so it is off 99% of the time and blends in with the surroundings.
The central element of the system is the control regulator Danfoss Icon2 Main Controller (MC) in Basic or Advanced versions, which configures and connects the system together and is used in underfloor heating and cooling systems to control individual rooms.
Basic version of the control regulator standardly supports wired and wireless thermostats, multiple heat sources, automatic hydronic balancing, Zigbee compatibility with the Danfoss Ally system and third parties, and manual floor cooling.
Advanced version of the control regulator additionally supports continuous real-time temperature regulation and has more advanced floor cooling functions. Depending on your needs, you can configure the system for wired, wireless, or combined variant.
Installation and configuration of the control regulator is easy and done through the same mobile user app. The control regulator is designed as "all-in-one" – meaning it already includes individual expansion modules that were installed separately in the previous version. Up to 15 room thermostats can be connected to the control regulator. It is easily installed on the wall using the included screws or DIN rail and built-in spirit levels. Connection is made using plug'n'push terminals.
Innovative wiring saves your time and plug'n'push terminals make installation easy with minimal use of tools. In one system, it is possible to combine wired and wireless room thermostats 24V. Thanks to the instructions contained in the app, your installation will always be quick and trouble-free. The firmware update function is also available through the mobile user app after connecting it to the control regulator.
In addition to traditional floor installation, you will certainly appreciate the easy and flexible installation of wireless thermostats with magnetic wall mounting. This gives you the freedom to place the thermostats exactly where you want them – the solution allows for arbitrary placement of the thermostat without restrictions. Simply press the magnet against the wall in the desired position and the wireless thermostats can be installed on it. In the case of the wired variant, simply connect the appropriate cable to the thermostat. All wired thermostat variants use network communication, and therefore can be connected two-wire in star configuration or via BUS.
As you can see for yourself, Danfoss Icon2 is truly a worthy full-fledged successor to the very popular smart zonal underfloor heating solution. If you are considering purchasing it, it might help to summarise what you can expect from its acquisition. The main advantages of the new Danfoss Icon2 system include up to 30% heating cost savings, easy and quick installation taking an average of just 9 minutes, or control of the heating and cooling system using a single room thermostat (underfloor heating and cooling / underfloor heating and ceiling cooling / ceiling heating and cooling).
You can look forward to automatic balancing of the entire heating and cooling system, minimising installer time and operating costs. Wired and wireless thermostats are available – suitable for additional installations and renovations. The solution allows preventing unwanted condensation of water by measuring the current temperature and humidity in each room and installing dew point sensors. You will appreciate easy and convenient remote temperature setting in each room separately using a thermostat with a touch screen or a mobile user app.
Danfoss Icon2 is compatible with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and from Q3/2023 will also be compatible with Apple Home for voice control. It is easy to commission using a mobile user app, including the creation of an electronic handover protocol after testing all system functions. The control of the system input temperature is handled according to the current needs of each room – energy savings and reduced operating costs.
The system is fully integrable via Zigbee within Smart Home applications (e.g., Somfy TaHoma). The optimisation function for heat pumps changes the logic of closing individual circuits to always maintain sufficient flow for defrosting the heat pump. It can be used for 2, 3, and 4-pipe systems. You will have full service support (made in Europe) available, as well as a 5-year extended warranty.
