The Honeywell Evohome control system has recently introduced new enhancements that add new features to the existing Evohome Central Control Units. Since September, users can find features such as heating/cooling mode, improved heat pump control, and new quick options in their units. Additionally, the Central Units are now equipped with a new switching unit, better adapted for heat pump regulation.
All updates are automatically uploaded to the Central Units directly from the cloud, so no third-party intervention is needed. You just need to check that the unit is connected to Wi-Fi, and it will take care of the rest. Newly purchased Central Units already have all updates pre-installed from the factory.
The existing quick option ECO is now changed to ECO/COMFORT. The expanded function not only allows you to reduce the temperature by up to 3 degrees in all rooms, as was previously the case, but now you can also increase the temperature by three degrees in all rooms. This function is usually used for short time intervals. However, you can still set the duration yourself. You can either manually cancel it after some time or set it for a certain period, after which the function will automatically turn off again. You can set how many degrees you want the ECO/COMFORT to change the room temperature in the Quick Options Settings.
The Central Unit now takes into account the outdoor temperature, which it receives from the AccuWeather server. It uses the obtained data for more efficient room heating by comparing the outdoor and indoor temperatures. You can choose between functions for warm or cold weather. The Warm Weather function reduces the activation of the heat source during periods when less heating is needed, thus reducing energy consumption. This function is particularly suitable during transitional periods when it independently determines when it is warm enough not to need home heating. If the outdoor temperature approaches the desired room temperature, that room will no longer be heated. The decision on which rooms this function will apply to is entirely up to the user.
The Winter Factor function is suitable for colder periods and rooms that feel colder (more draft, large windows, etc.). This function slightly increases the desired temperature in these rooms depending on the outdoor temperature to maintain the thermal comfort of the residents. Again, this function will only apply to the rooms you select. The range of temperature increase is from 0.5°C to 3°C. However, it is necessary to set how much the outdoor temperature should drop below the desired room temperature for the function to activate.
The outdoor temperature is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. The Central Unit downloads it from the server based on the postcode set when creating the location in the Honeywell Home account. If the unit is not connected to Wi-Fi, it cannot download the necessary data, and both functions will not be available or displayed in the Smart functions menu.
If the Evohome system is the main heating regulator in the household and controls the central heat source, the Advanced Performance Staging function is now available. It takes into account the characteristics of individual rooms and makes corrections in heat supply based on them. The function is based on an algorithm that examines the heat supply requirements of each room type and activates the heat source based on this data. Heating is thus even more efficient. For poorly insulated and older houses, it is advisable to choose Standard Compensation, while for new and well-insulated houses, Partial Compensation is sufficient.
In the installation menu under System Components, a new Heat Pump option has been added for controlling the central heat source. However, to control the heat pump, it is necessary to pair the new BDR91T switching unit, which is now supplied with new Central Units. The new function aims to protect the heat pump from frequent switching, which could lead to its wear. The function determines the time after which the pump can be restarted. Until the set time elapses, the pump will not start.
The Central Unit can control individual rooms or the central heat source in Heating, Cooling, or Heating/Cooling modes. The modes can be switched manually directly on the unit, or the unit will receive information about the current mode from the heat source. When the cooling mode is selected, a snowflake symbol will appear in all rooms, the heating program will switch to cooling temperatures, and the cooling device will activate. Cooling temperatures and their schedule can only be adjusted when the unit is in Cooling mode. The same applies analogously to the heating schedule.
Will the priority be on heating the hot water tank or heating the household? In the Central Unit, you can set whether the hot water tank is heated first and then the rooms are heated, or both will occur simultaneously. Choosing priorities can shorten the hot water tank heating time and prevent possible overheating. This function can only be used if the Evohome system independently controls both the heating valve and the DHW valve.
All new features and options are now included in the updated Central Unit manual, which you can download here.
