Gas Detectors for the Home

Natural gas has become a common part of our lives today, whether we use it for cooking or heating. However, improper use or insufficient maintenance of appliances poses a danger that is best prevented.

In households, we are most threatened by carbon monoxide, which is neither smelled nor seen, but is deadly poisonous. Equally dangerous are natural gas and propane-butane, which most commonly occur during cooking. Poor maintenance of gas appliances or their technical failure can directly threaten our lives. We can eliminate risks by conducting regular inspections of appliances and pipelines and installing gas detectors.

A gas detector detects the leakage of dangerous gas even at low concentrations. If a certain concentration or required value is exceeded, the detector triggers an alarm, which can be audible or visible, ideally both.

How to Best Install a Gas Detector?

Carbon Monoxide Detector: In households, we most commonly use carbon monoxide detectors, also known as CO detectors, which we place near water heaters and boilers. Carbon monoxide begins to form in the event of a fault in a gas appliance, poor oxygen intake to the appliance, a fault in the flue, or poor fuel combustion.

Carbon monoxide spreads evenly throughout the space, so the detector is placed 1.5 meters above the floor or at eye level and simultaneously near water heaters and boilers.

Flammable Gas Detector: This detector is used to monitor gas appliances and stored gas cylinders.

A methane or natural gas detector is placed on the wall about 10 cm below the ceiling because methane is lighter than air, meaning it rises.

Conversely, propane-butane is heavier than air, so it sinks. For this reason, the detector must be placed about 15 cm above the floor.

Some detectors are capable of detecting multiple gases at once. These are mainly flammable gas detectors. To ensure safety in the home, it is most common to install 2–3 detectors: a carbon monoxide detector, a smoke detector (which monitors for fire), and a natural gas or propane-butane detector.

From our selection, these detectors should not be missing in your home:

Honeywell XC 70 Carbon Monoxide Detector

The XC 70 detector is suitable for regular use in households. An undeniable advantage is the 7-year battery life and IP 44 protection, allowing the detector to be placed even in the bathroom.

Honeywell XC100-CS Carbon Monoxide Detector

The XC100-CS detector has an extended battery life of 10 years from the manufacturer and enhanced alarm notification.

Honeywell XC100D-CS Carbon Monoxide Detector

The XC100D-CS detector, like the XC100-CS detector, has an extended battery life of 10 years and enhanced alarm notification. The multifunctional display shows information about the level of toxic CO concentration.

Honeywell plans to implement the XC70, XC100-CS, and XC100D-CS detectors into the Lyric platform, allowing you to monitor measured values in an app directly on your mobile phone, with a warning message sent to you if exceeded.
