Hard Water in the Household is a Problem. Do You Know What Exactly It Causes?

Even though hard water in the household can become quite costly, many people are unaware that they have hard water or do not know that there is a simple solution to this problem. Find out what hard water causes and how to soften it.

What is Hard Water

Hard water is defined as water with an increased content of dissolved minerals, especially calcium and magnesium. Hard water affects most Czech households because calcium is released into groundwater from calcareous substrates, which cover most of the Czech Republic's territory.

The ideal hardness of water is usually indicated by the content of dissolved minerals ranging from 0.7-2.5 mmol/l. Hard water is that with a mineral content higher than 2.5 mmol/l, while mineral waters have a mineral content higher than 3.75 mmol/l.

Hard water reduces the effectiveness of cosmetic and cleaning products.

What Hard Water Causes

Hard water is a problem that should not be underestimated. It negatively impacts your family budget as well as your health. Specifically, hard water has the following negative effects:

  • Formation of Limescale: Limescale shortens the lifespan of appliances and faucets and causes more frequent malfunctions. It is said that the lifespan of appliances is reduced by about a third due to hard water. Clogged appliances also have higher energy consumption.

  • Lower Effectiveness of Cosmetic and Cleaning Products: Cleaning agents and cosmetics dissolve poorly in hard water, leading to higher consumption and unsatisfactory results.

  • Unsightly Stains and Coating: The high content of dissolved minerals in water causes stains on dishes, coatings on faucets and tiles in the bathroom, and streaks when washing windows and mirrors.

  • Health Issues: Hard water used for personal hygiene dries out the skin and hair, contributing to worsening skin conditions and poor hair quality, which becomes brittle and lacks shine.

  • Worse Taste of Cooked Food: Hard water also causes reduced sensory properties of cooked dishes, teas, and coffee and prolongs the cooking time of ingredients.

NOTE: Consuming hard water is not dangerous; on the contrary, the mineral content in drinking water is vital for the human body. Therefore, do not trust sellers of devices that remove all dissolved substances from drinking water. Excessively soft water is not drinkable. Similarly, it is not advisable to consume mineral waters long-term, as the high mineral content can contribute to the formation of urinary, gall, and kidney stones or increased blood pressure.

How to Determine Water Hardness?

Hard water is most commonly identified by limescale deposits on faucets, in kettles, coffee makers, washing machines, dishwashers, and other appliances that use water.

If you are unsure, you can use one of the methods for measuring water hardness.

  • Soap Test: If soap lathers poorly in water and instead clouds it, you likely have hard water.

  • Home Test Strips: You can purchase water hardness tests in drugstores, which will provide you with an approximate indication of the dissolved mineral content.

  • Professional Water Analysis: The most accurate data will, of course, be provided by a water analysis from an accredited laboratory. If you draw water from a public water supply, the local water company must provide you with information about the current and precise composition of the water.

The Honeywell water softener will save you a significant amount of money.

The Solution to Hard Water is Installing a Home Water Softener

If hard water is a problem in your household, you are probably considering, how to soften water. The solution is simple: invest in a home water treatment system. These devices remove the necessary amount of minerals from the water, allowing you to set the resulting water hardness. To ensure the water is suitable for both household appliances and consumption, the optimal hardness is 2-2.5 mmol/l.

With a water softener, you will extend the lifespan of your appliances by a third and save a significant amount of money due to lower consumption of cleaning and cosmetic products and energy. The return on investment is therefore stated to be within a few years.

Maintenance of water treatment systems is very simple and inexpensive – you only need to insert a special regenerative salt tablet, or ordinary table salt, into the softener at regular intervals (usually once every few months).

Other common water quality issues include:

  • High chlorine or other disinfectant, pesticide, and chemical content, which can be addressed by treating drinking water with a carbon filter.

  • Presence of mechanical impurities – mainly concerns private water sources and is addressed by home water filtration using a sediment filter.

  • High iron content can be resolved with so-called water deironizers.

How to Choose a Water Softener

Water treatment systems differ mainly in capacity, so choose according to your water consumption. Modern water softeners also offer a range of smart features – such as automatic alerts for the need to insert a regenerative tablet or control via a mobile app. Examples include Honeywell softening filters, which you can find in our offer. These water treatment systems are installed on the main supply, so water with optimal composition and the highest quality will flow from all taps in your home.
