How to Properly Install and Connect a Submersible Pump in a Well or Borehole?

Whether you have a family house, cottage, or holiday home, you can't do without water in the summer. One of the simplest ways to draw water from your own sources is with a submersible pump. How do you install and maintain it so that it serves you well?

Upgrading Your Water Pump is Worth It

First, consider whether it's time to get a new pump. If you have an older pump, it might fail at the most inconvenient time, leaving you without water during the summer heat.

Summer is the ideal time to replace the pump. The terrain is accessible, and you won't be surprised by cold or frost while working. Moreover, you'll have everything ready for the autumn and winter seasons.

How to Choose a Submersible Pump for a Well

For a shallow well, a self-priming pump placed on the surface will suffice. For boreholes and wells deeper than 7 meters, you need to purchase a submersible pump.

The most important criteria when choosing are the pumping height and flow rate of the pump. Also, focus on the dimensions of the pump to ensure it fits comfortably into the narrow borehole and the maximum submersion depth.

Modern submersible pumps from Grundfos and Wilo are characterized by easy installation and long lifespan. Some come with a control unit or remote control option, which greatly facilitates and streamlines their operation. Suitable protective accessories include integrated dry-run protection, a frequency converter, or a check valve for the pump.

If you only use the well water for the garden, a simpler pump will suffice.

Recommended Well and Borehole Pumps from Our Offer

From our offer, we recommend the submersible Grundfos SBA well pump, which can be placed up to 10 meters deep. The pump has an integrated control unit and a suction basket to protect the pump from impurities. The delivery includes everything needed, so you just need to connect the pump and you can start using it immediately.

For a drilled well, we recommend the Grundfos SQE pump with a pressure switch. It includes a compact water pressure tank, dry-run protection, and a control unit. It has very high efficiency at low operating costs. This set is suitable for stable and year-round supply of drinking water to a family house.

Preparing for the Installation of a Submersible Water Pump

To ensure the pump works correctly and without faults, make sure there is enough clean water in the well before installation. A low water level can cause the pump to dry-run, while solid particle admixtures can cause it to seize.

Both of these problems can damage or even completely destroy the pump. If the borehole is clogged, have it cleaned before installing the pump. Also, check the borehole's passability, for example, using a pipe with the same diameter as the pump, to ensure the pump doesn't get stuck in the borehole.

Then prepare the materials needed for installation. Besides the pump itself, you will need:

  • a waterproof electrical cable of appropriate length,
  • discharge pipe or hose with the same diameter as the pump outlet,
  • suspension rope,
  • connecting materials – clamps, clips, seals, etc.

If a check valve is not part of the pump, you will need to install it separately. As accessories for the well pump, we also recommend dry-run protection and mechanical water filtration. If the pump is part of a home waterworks, prepare a water pressure tank for installation as well.

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Submersible Pump

The installation of a submersible water pump involves its assembly, lowering into the borehole, and connecting to electricity.

  1. First, assemble all the pump components. Connect the discharge pipe to it using a special fitting and seal it with a pipe clamp. If a check valve is not part of the pump, install it before the discharge pipe.
  2. If the pump includes external safety features, such as dry-run protection or a safety valve, install them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Then connect the pump to the suspension rope – well pumps have mounts or eyes for this purpose.
  4. Next, secure the cable to the pipe using cable ties, approximately every 3 meters along its entire length. Ensure the cable is thoroughly sealed against water.
  5. You can now carefully lower the pump into the borehole, about 1 meter above the bottom. Never lower it completely to the bottom, even before starting it. The pump would stir up sediments at the bottom and could suck them in. Therefore, it is necessary to know the exact depth of the borehole.
  6. Wait for the pump to fill with water. Then connect it to electricity according to the manufacturer's instructions. The connection can be either to a socket or, for 400V pumps, via a contactor.
  7. Conduct a test run. Monitor the water flow and pressure. Pour the water into transparent glasses and check its clarity.

Common Mistakes When Installing a Well Pump

The most common mistake is placing the pump too low. The pump then sucks in sludge, which damages it. Therefore, proceed carefully and slowly when lowering it, and always measure the borehole depth in advance.

Many people suspend the pump by the cable, which then becomes stressed and can lead to a short circuit. Common problems also include water leaks caused by poor sealing. Dry-running can lead to complete motor destruction. Therefore, don't forget to purchase dry-run protection for the pump.

Maintenance, Inspection, and Servicing of a Submersible Pump

A water pump is practically maintenance-free. However, it is advisable to inspect it once a year. During the inspection, focus on the tightness of the joints, clogging of the pump, flow, and pressure. Ideally, have a water analysis done to ensure there are no solid particles in it.

If the pump is not in use during winter, remove it from the borehole, disconnect it from electricity, let all the water drain out, and place it in a dry, frost-free location. Also, regularly clean the borehole, at least once every 5 years, or immediately if clogged.
