How to prevent water damage: smart protection with the Resideo Caspian system (L Series)

A burst dishwasher hose, a leaking valve under the sink, or frozen pipework in the plant room can cause damage worth tens of thousands within just a few hours. According to the Association of British Insurers, the average insurance claim for water damage is around 10 000 euros. The good news is that the risk can be significantly reduced. The Resideo L Series system – marketed under the name Caspian – not only detects water leaks, but can also respond automatically: it shuts off the water supply before a minor leak turns into a major incident.

What is the problem: water does not wait

A standard flood detector will alert you once water is already flowing, but it still leaves shutting off the supply up to you. If you are not at home – or you are asleep – an alert alone is not enough. What really makes sense is combining two things: reliable detection and automatic intervention. That is exactly the principle on which the Resideo L Series system is built.

How the Resideo Caspian system works

The system consists of two basic components that communicate wirelessly via your home Wi-Fi and do not require any central control unit (gateway):

  • L5 Wi-Fi shut-off valve (on bola.cz under code VWS02Y015EE for DN15) – a motorised ball valve installed on the main water supply. As soon as it receives a leak signal, it automatically shuts off the supply.
  • L1 Wi-Fi water leak and freeze detector (code RWLD3006-01) – a battery-powered sensor with a 1.5 m detection cable, a local 100 dB(A) alarm, and phone notifications.

How leak detection works

The principle is simple: the detection cable responds to the presence of water along its entire length. When water wets the cable – whether it is connected directly to the valve actuator or to the wireless L1 detector – the L5 valve actuator shuts off the water supply within a few seconds. At the same time, an alert is sent to the Resideo app on your phone, so you know about the event even if you are on the other side of the country.

The detection range can be extended in two ways: by lengthening the detection cable with additional cable sections (up to approximately 150 m), and by adding more wireless L1 detectors in places where leaks are most likely to occur – near the boiler or water heater, by the washing machine, dishwasher, under the sink, or in the plant room. The cable can also be wrapped directly around pipework.

Versions and what is included

The L5 shut-off valve is available in four sizes so it can be matched to the relevant pipe size: DN15, DN20, DN25 and DN32. Please note the difference between the two product ranges:

  • VWS02Y0xxEE – the L5 Wi-Fi shut-off valve only, supplied with actuator, metal clip, power supply unit, and one 1.5 m detection cable (for example VWS02Y015EE for DN15).
  • VWS01Y0xxEE – a complete set that also includes the wireless L1 Wi-Fi detector.

If you are starting from scratch and want to cover several risk areas, the VWS01Y0xxEE set is a practical choice; the VWS02Y0xxEE valve can then be supplemented with L1 detectors as required.

The system is certified to DVGW, ACS, WRAS, CE, RoHS and REACH. In the product brochure, the manufacturer states a 5-year warranty for the L5 shut-off valve and 2 years for the L1 detector (we recommend checking the current warranty terms with the seller).

What to consider during installation

The L5 valve should be installed on the main water supply, ideally immediately downstream of the main shut-off valve and water meter, in a heated plant room. As it is intended for indoor use only and the actuator requires mains power, you will need a 230 V socket nearby. An important technical limitation: the actuator is not designed for frequent switching – a closing and opening cycle should take place no more than once every 10 minutes to prevent overheating. Installation of the ball valve itself is standard and can be carried out quickly by a plumber; configuration is then completed in the Resideo app, which guides you step by step through connecting to Wi-Fi.

Place the L1 detectors where statistics show the highest incidence of damage: by the washing machine and dishwasher, under the kitchen sink, near the hot water cylinder and boiler, and in the bathroom. Thanks to battery power and wireless communication, there is no need to run any wiring to them.

Practical scenario

Imagine a burst dishwasher inlet hose while the whole family is away on holiday. The L1 detector placed under the kitchen units detects water, triggers a local alarm, and wirelessly sends a signal to the L5 valve on the main supply. Within a few seconds, it shuts off the water to the entire flat. Meanwhile, you receive a notification on your phone and can deal with the situation calmly – for example by calling a plumber – instead of returning home to a flooded property. The app also allows you to set notifications for your plumber, so they can respond as quickly as possible.
