Topology and Usage Examples of the Siemens Connected Home Smart Heating System

ZigBee Router GTW100ZB Siemens Connected Home is essential for all use cases. In some cases, it may be necessary to use wireless relay switching units RCR110.2ZB functioning as signal repeaters to ensure stability of the ZigBee network.

Radiator Valve Actuators without Boiler Control

Heat Source: Municipal or central boiler room in the building, or district heating
Heating System: Hydronic radiators
Installed Connected Home Devices: Radiator Valve Actuators SSA911.02ZB
Room Temperature Control and Boiler Management: All rooms are controlled independently.
Implementation Variants:

  • One room can have multiple radiator actuators connected.
  • By adding a switching unit, hot water preparation can be turned on/off manually or based on time schedules set in the mobile app.

Radiator Valve Actuators with Boiler Control (or Zone Valve or Heat Pump)

Heat Source: Boiler, heat pump
Heating System: Hydronic radiators
Installed Connected Home Devices: Radiator Valve Actuators and switching unit
Room Temperature Control and Boiler Management: Radiator valve actuators send a heat demand to the switching unit, which controls the boiler. All rooms are controlled independently.
Implementation Variants:

  • One room can have multiple radiator actuators connected.
  • The switching unit allows hot water preparation to be turned on/off manually or based on time schedules set in the mobile app.

Heating Controlled by a Thermostat Located in a Reference Room

Heat Source: Boiler, heat pump
Heating System: Hydronic radiators
Installed Connected Home Devices: Wired Thermostat RDZ100ZB or Wireless Thermostat RDZ101ZB and switching unit (if RDZ101ZB is installed)
Room Temperature Control and Boiler Management: All rooms are heated according to the temperature in the reference room.
Implementation Variants:

  • The thermostat connects either directly to the boiler or controls the boiler using the thermostat's wireless switching unit.
  • By adding a switching unit, hot water preparation can be turned on/off manually or based on time schedules set in the mobile app.

Combination of Thermostat and Radiator Valve Actuators

Heat Source: Boiler, heat pump
Heating System: Hydronic radiators
Installed Connected Home Devices: Wired Thermostat RDZ100ZB or Wireless Thermostat RDZ101ZB, radiator valve actuators and switching unit (if RDZ101ZB is installed)
Room Temperature Control and Boiler Management: All or some radiators are equipped with radiator valve actuators, except those in the reference room.
Implementation Variants:

  • The boiler is controlled directly by the wired version of the thermostat (RDZ100ZB). In this case, radiator actuators cannot directly request heat from the boiler. The boiler is controlled only according to the heat demand in the reference room.
  • In the case of a wireless thermostat (RDZ101ZB), the boiler is controlled by the switching unit.
    • If the switching unit is configured as a thermostat switching unit in the mobile app, the boiler is controlled according to the heat demand in the reference room.
    • In the case of a wireless thermostat (RDZ101ZB) to which a switching unit set as a thermostat switching unit is not connected, independent control of the given room is not possible.
    • The switching unit can control hot water preparation based on time schedules set in the mobile app.

Zones Controlled by Multiple Thermostats

Heat Source: Boiler, heat pump
Heating System: Zones with hydronic radiators controlled by zone valves
Installed Connected Home Devices: Wired Thermostats RDZ100ZB and switching unit
Room Temperature Control and Boiler Management: Each zone is independently controlled by a separate thermostat. The boiler turns on when the switching unit receives a heat demand from any thermostat.
Implementation Variants:

  • The switching unit allows hot water preparation to be turned on/off manually or based on time schedules set in the mobile app.
  • Wired thermostats can be replaced with wireless thermostats connected to switching units set as thermostat switching units.

Zones with Underfloor Heating

Heat Source: Boiler, heat pump
Heating System: Underfloor heating
Installed Connected Home Devices: Wired Thermostats RDZ100ZB and switching unit
Room Temperature Control and Boiler Management:

  • Each room is controlled by a thermostat that controls the underfloor heating loop valve.
  • Each room can be controlled independently.
  • The boiler turns on when the switching unit receives a heat demand from any thermostat.

Implementation Variants:

  • The switching unit allows hot water preparation to be turned on/off manually or based on time schedules set in the mobile app.
  • Wired thermostats can be replaced with wireless thermostats connected to switching units set as thermostat switching units.

Combination of Underfloor Heating and Radiators

Heat Source: Boiler, heat pump
Heating System: Combination of hydronic radiators and underfloor heating
Installed Connected Home Devices: Radiator Valve Actuators, wired thermostat RDZ100ZB and switching unit
Room Temperature Control and Boiler Management:

  • All radiators are equipped with thermostatic valve actuators and underfloor heating with zone valves of underfloor heating loops controlled by thermostats.
  • Rooms are controlled independently.
  • The boiler is controlled by the switching unit, which considers the heat demand of both the radiator valve actuators and the thermostats.

Implementation Variants: The switching unit allows hot water preparation to be turned on/off manually or based on time schedules set in the mobile app.

System with Radiators under Covers

Heat Source: Boiler, heat pump
Heating System: Hydronic radiators, hydronic radiators with covers
Installed Connected Home Devices: Radiator Valve Actuators, wired thermostat RDZ100ZB and switching unit
Room Temperature Control and Boiler Management:

  • Temperature sensing on a covered radiator is not accurate.
  • It is recommended to use a wired version of the thermostat, which will control the thermoelectric radiator valve actuator.
  • The boiler is controlled by the switching unit. It considers the heat demand of both the radiator valve actuators and the thermostats.

Implementation Variants: The switching unit allows hot water preparation to be turned on/off manually or based on time schedules set in the mobile app.
