An oxygen detector (oxygen sensor, oxygen meter) is a fundamental device for protecting the health and life of workers in areas exposed to oxygen deficiency. It is advisable to install the detector or, for example, lower it on a rope into a space with low ventilation levels (typically unventilated and long-unused rooms) where work or maintenance is to be carried out and there is a risk of endangering workers due to lack of oxygen, such as tanks, shafts, and pits. It is also suitable for enclosed spaces where welding work is taking place, which involves high oxygen consumption. Oxygen detectors thus provide an option to supplement the protective system with an alert for dangerously low oxygen levels, but they can also be used in the case of storing oxygen cylinders, for example, in backup oxygen tanks in hospitals, which could pose a risk of explosion or fire at dangerously high oxygen levels. In addition to real-time concentration measurement, the oxygen detector also allows for measuring the minimum and maximum recorded oxygen concentration. The oxygen detector can be part of a larger gas detection system or a standalone detector. In situations where the aim is to protect the inhabitants of a building, the oxygen sensor is usually mounted near the ground, as pure oxygen is approximately 10% heavier than air. Oxygen detectors typically have a measurement range of 0-30% O2. Each O2 detector is calibrated before dispatch to ensure safe and reliable operation.
