The valve has an asymmetrical water flow arrangement. This thermostatic valve does not contain scalding protection!

Dear Joris, the first assumption is correct. When you close the hot water inlet you will get cold water from the outlet. When you close the cold water inlet the valve will be fully open since it would be expecting to get the cold water. This behavior can damage the valve. Strongly suggest always use both inlets. I don't think this valve is suitable for your application.
