Explosive Environment ATEX

ATEX (from the French Atmosphères Explosibles) refers to European standards that define safety requirements for equipment and protective systems used in explosive environments. This type of environment, common in industries such as chemical, mining, or energy, includes areas where an explosive atmosphere can form due to a mixture of flammable substances and air.

Products certified according to ATEX meet strict safety requirements and are designed to operate safely in these hazardous environments. ATEX directives divide hazardous areas into specific zones based on the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere occurring:

Zones for flammable gases:

  • Zone 0: An explosive atmosphere is present continuously or frequently (for example, inside tanks with flammable gases).
  • Zone 1: An explosive atmosphere may occur occasionally during normal operation.
  • Zone 2: An explosive atmosphere occurs only rarely and for a short period.

Zones for flammable dusts:

  • Zone 20: An explosive dust atmosphere is permanently present or occurs frequently.
  • Zone 21: An explosive dust atmosphere may appear occasionally during normal operation.
  • Zone 22: An explosive dust atmosphere occurs only rarely or for a short duration.
