The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) issued the IEC 61108 standard, which defines safety requirements. Both the device and the system must meet all requirement categories in order to achieve SIL certification. The SIL 3 level allows for the possibility of one dangerous product failure every 1,140 years.
