There is no doubt about the importance of filtering and treating drinking water. Unfiltered water can be contaminated mechanically, chemically, or organically, causing health issues and damaging household equipment. A properly chosen water filter will ensure high quality and safety of drinking water. However, a water filter requires proper care and regular cleaning or replacement of filter cartridges. The maintenance of the filter depends on its type. In our article, you will learn how to maintain different types of drinking water filters.
Water filter primarily consists of the filter body, which connects to the piping, a sump, and filter cartridge or cartridges. Other components of the water filter include seals, connection fittings, and brackets. Shut-off valves should be installed before and after the filter to allow maintenance or replacement of the filter. In the case of mechanical impurity filters with a screen, an automatic flushing system or flushing valve can also be an additional component.
The function of filters is ensured by the filter cartridge, through which water flows and which captures unwanted impurities in the water – whether mechanical, chemical, or organic. Each filter cartridge works on a different principle and removes different types of impurities from the water. The most common are filters for mechanical impurities, where the filter cartridge is a fine screen, and filters with activated carbon, or a combination of both.
In the case of heavily contaminated water, a so-called pre-filter, a screen with lower density, can be added to the filtration unit to capture the largest impurities and thus extend the lifespan of the filter cartridges. This option is especially recommended for well and rainwater filters. Water softeners solve problems with hard water, while iron removers adjust iron-rich water.
There are really many options, so to determine the correct type of filter, you should have a professional drinking water analysis available. All filter cartridges have one thing in common – limited lifespan. Familiarize yourself with the ways to maintain filter cartridges and always have perfectly clean and healthy water.

As mentioned, filter cartridges differ according to the type of impurities they are designed for. The maintenance of a drinking water filter thus depends on the type of filter cartridge. The screen in a mechanical impurity filter only needs regular cleaning and is replaced when worn out. Other types of filters, such as filters with activated carbon, require regular cartridge replacement.
The lifespan of filter cartridges is determined by the manufacturer, but generally, they should be replaced or cleaned at least once every 6 months. If you notice deteriorated water quality or lower pressure in the taps, do not hesitate to replace it immediately. Replacement and cleaning can be done easily by yourself.
A mechanical impurity filter contains a screen of varying fineness that captures small rust fragments, sand, and other particles. To ensure that home water filtration works correctly and the water filter does not clog, the screen must be cleaned regularly, at least once every 6 months.
Never clean the filter cartridge screen manually or with a brush, as it is too delicate and could be damaged. The only correct way to clean it is by flushing. Mechanical impurity filters may be equipped with an automatic flushing system or a flushing valve; otherwise, you must flush it manually. How to do it?
First, turn off the water supply using the valves at the filter's inlet and outlet. Then carefully unscrew the filter using a wrench or by hand. During disassembly, water may leak from the filter, so have a bucket or cloth under the piping. Remove the cartridge and carefully rinse it under running water. Then return the cartridge to the filter and screw the filter back together with the seal.
If you want to replace the filter cartridge efficiently, have a clean spare cartridge on hand. This will significantly speed up the replacement process, allowing you to turn the water supply back on sooner and flush the used filter cartridge later. A spare cartridge is also useful if the used one turns out to be damaged.
In the case of water filters with a flushing valve, you do not need to disassemble the water filter. Simply connect a hose with the appropriate diameter to the flushing valve, then open the valve and let the contaminated water drain into a prepared container. Let the water drain until it runs completely clear.
Drinking water filters with automatic flushing use reverse water flow for self-cleaning. If equipped with a control unit, they can independently assess the need for flushing based on the analysis of various parameters.
Proper filter maintenance ensures perfect drinking water quality.
A filter with activated carbon has very versatile uses and addresses a wide range of drinking water issues. It removes most chemical and organic impurities from the water while not depriving the water of essential minerals. Additionally, it improves the taste of the water and removes unwanted odors.
Filter cartridge with activated carbon has a lifespan of approximately 6 months, after which it needs to be replaced. The replacement process is similar to cleaning the screen. After turning off the water supply and unscrewing the filter, simply remove the old filter cartridge and replace it with a new one. Screw the filter back on and do not forget to insert the rubber ring seal into the thread.
Some manufacturers of carbon filters offer a regeneration service for the activated carbon filter cartridge, during which unwanted substances trapped in the filter are removed, thus restoring its function.
If you use other types of filter cartridges, follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. They determine their lifespan and method of replacement.
